Stories of Chingay: A Yearly Family Outing to Town

As children, we were happy because after the Chingay procession, our father would bring us to eat and go window shopping. This helped pass the time, as the buses were always crowded once the procession ended…. We also needed to thank the cleaners, who would immediately start cleaning the surrounding area within a short time, before traffic on the road resumed.

As a child, I always looked forward to Chingay. My family—my father, mother, two sisters, and I—would try to attend every year.

Chingay always had many different types of floats, colourfully decorated with unique designs. Sometimes, different groups of students in school uniforms would also join the Chingay procession. The costumes of the school groups were always bright and colourful. The streets were sometimes closed for the Chingay procession. The police were always around to direct and protect the public, ensuring there were no disturbances or fights.

We would always take crowded buses to attend the Chingay procession in town. The buses were packed, and we had to walk quite far to reach the procession area.

Once the Chingay procession was over, we needed to thank the cleaners, who would immediately start cleaning the surrounding area within a short time, before traffic on the road resumed. Then it would be back to busy traffic like normal.
