Stories of Chingay: Evolution of Chingay

There are thousands of performers from all over the world. They use high technology such as LED costumes and props, digital backdrops and projections, making it a mega show.

Chingay is one of the most colourful street parades that celebrates multicultural spirit.

It started in 1973 in Singapore. Originally, it was created to bring festive cheer after the government banned firecrackers for safety reasons. Over time, this event changed from a local Chinese celebration into a multicultural national event.

When I was young, I remember that Chingay was just a small-scale street parade mainly in the neighbourhoods. There were simple lion and dragon dances, and stilt walkers were the main attractions. The participants mainly came from clans, schools, associations, and volunteers.

Nowadays, the Chingay procession is a large-scale, modern, and brightly spectacular national celebration in Singapore. There are thousands of performers from all over the world. They use high technology such as LED costumes and props, digital backdrops and projections, making it a mega show.
