Stories of Chingay: Remembering CNY through the years

Firecrackers are a thing of the past, we now watch Chingay parades on TV.

Author: Esther Tan

“I fondly remember my childhood Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations. I eagerly awaited the festivations, knowing I’d receive angbao (red packets), play firecrackers, and enjoy home visits. Back then, our busy lives and limited public transportation meant we didn’t visit relatives often, so we’d take a “”ba wong cher”” ( taxi,霸王车) instead.

Fast forward to today, and CNY has changed. Firecrackers are a thing of the past, and we now watch Chingay parades on TV. Unfortunately, tickets to attend the event are pricey, and it’s not always possible to get a chance to watch live.

Despite that, I still enjoy the Foreigner’s presentation – it’s always a treat to see something unusual! I’m also glad to see the Chingay Parade evolving and offering more variety each year.”
