My Wedding in August 1988

My mother sewed my wedding gown by hand, simple lace, no designer label, just her love stitched into every seam. My husband and I kept the celebration small: forty loved ones, four tables, a seafood dinner at East Coast. Some guests didn’t even realise it was our wedding until they arrived. What I remember most isn’t the dress or the venue though. It’s my two-year-old niece, mid-meltdown, patting her own tears away and whispering “don’t cry, don’t cry” to herself. That’s the moment our whole family still laughs about, decades later.

In August 1988, I experienced one of the most meaningful moments of my life — my wedding day. Looking back, I realise that the beauty of that day was not found in grand decorations or an extravagant celebration, but in the love, effort, and connections shared between family and friends.

My wedding gown was lovingly designed and sewn by my mother. Using simple materials such as lace and hand stitching, she created a special dress just for me. The gown was sleeveless, with a unique collar that resembled a huge bib. It was not a designer dress or made with expensive materials, but every stitch carried my mother’s love and blessings. This taught me that the greatest gifts are often those created with care and sincerity.

My husband and I planned our wedding ourselves and chose to keep the celebration simple. Instead of a large ceremony, we invited about 40 loved ones and close friends to a seafood restaurant at East Coast, where we shared a warm dinner across four tables. Some friends were even surprised when they discovered that the gathering was actually my wedding celebration! To us, what mattered most was being surrounded by the people who supported us.

One memorable moment was when my two-year-old niece started crying and, while wiping her own tears, kept telling herself, “Don’t cry, don’t cry.” Everyone laughed at her innocent attempt to comfort herself, creating a joyful memory that our family still remembers today.

This simple wedding reminds me that life’s most precious milestones are not measured by how grand they are, but by the relationships we build and the memories we create across generations. The love from my mother, the laughter of my young niece, and the presence of our loved ones continue to connect our family even after many years.
