Now, the Chingay parade has moved into neighbourhoods, making it easier for frail seniors to have a look. Last year, I managed to get tickets for my daughter and me to be there. My daughter’s wish was fulfilled.
Every year at night, we would watch the Chingay parade on television. My daughter would sit nearby and watch in wonder. There were many performances, colourful floats, and beautiful dancers. She wished to be in the Chingay parade, not just as part of the audience watching live on the street. The costumes, music, and the dancers’ movements were amazing. What caught her eye the most was the multicultural fusion dance.
I told her that “Chingay” means the art of costume and masquerade in the Hokkien dialect. Chingay started in 1973 as a humble street parade. Now it has become one of Singapore’s biggest celebrations. People of different ages, races, and cultures take part in it. Chingay is our living heritage, a tradition that everyone celebrates.
Now, the Chingay parade has moved into neighbourhoods, making it easier for frail seniors to have a look. Last year, I managed to get tickets for my daughter and me to be there. My daughter’s wish was fulfilled. It was a joyful moment to see the vibrant annual street parade and witness the unity of all Singaporeans.
