My maternal grandmother passed away in 1994 at the age of 92, leaving behind a “gift” that continues to inspire me. She was my idol, a lighthouse of grace and elegance throughout my childhood. Though our family was not wealthy, she lived her life like a true “tai tai,” embracing a routine that radiated beauty and serenity. Each morning, she would rise with the sun, meticulously tying her hair into a neat bun and applying a touch of light makeup, ensuring she always looked her best.
Her days were filled with simple yet meaningful activities—gentle house chores, moments spent watching television, and the soothing tone of her voice as she shared stories that brimmed with wisdom. I can still vividly recall the peaceful atmosphere that surrounded us as I listened to her tales; she was gentle and wise, never raising her voice, embodying a calm strength that was both comforting and inspiring.
However, as time passed, we noticed changes. One day, we witnessed her raising her voice to a relative, an unusual occurrence that led us to discover she was down dementia. It was heartbreaking to see her struggle to recognize some of us, especially those who lived far from our hometown.
In the twilight of her life, the only person she seemed to remember consistently was the maid who stood by her side 24/7. Yet, amidst the sadness, there was a silver lining—she clung to her beloved tai tai routine, as if to remind us of the vibrant woman she once was.
I will forever cherish the memory of her last day with us. All her sons, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gathered in Penang to celebrate her birthday. We took countless photos, capturing the love that surrounded her. On the way home from the restaurant, she peacefully fell asleep in the car, with a smile gracing her face.
Having lost two sons, she navigated her grief with strength. She never allowed hardship to dim her spirit, and her life was a testament to love and strength. My grandmother may no longer be with us, but her elegance, gentleness, and wisdom continue to live on in my heart and in the stories we share as a family. She will always be a guiding light in my life.
