The beauty of the Chingay Parade lies not only in its spectacle or visual grandeur, but in a beauty born of mutual respect and inclusivity—being different, yet moving forward together… I was already part of this multicultural tapestry. Because I was watching, understanding, and embracing it.
My story with the Chingay Parade did not begin at the side of the stage, but in front of a television screen. Many years ago, I first saw the Chingay Parade on TV—dazzling lights, long processions, and people from different ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds dressed in vibrant, distinctive costumes, marching along the same streets. In that moment, I truly felt that Singapore’s multiculturalism does not only exist in textbooks or slogans; it is alive, moving through the heart of the city.
Later, when I had the opportunity to watch the parade in person, I was still just one of the many spectators in the crowd. Standing among them, I saw more than just a performance. I witnessed cultures naturally intersecting—conversations in different languages, faces of different skin tones, and traditions being appreciated and respected under the same lights. In the audience, some people raised their phones to record the moment, some gently explained the parade to their children, while others nodded along instinctively when familiar music began to play.
As the parade unfolded, I noticed how smoothly and seamlessly the different segments connected. Each performance retained its own cultural identity, yet blended effortlessly into the whole. This helped me understand that the beauty of the Chingay Parade lies not only in its spectacle or visual grandeur, but in a beauty born of mutual respect and inclusivity—being different, yet moving forward together.
When the procession flowed through the night like a river of light and applause echoed along the streets, I suddenly realised that even as a spectator, I was already part of this multicultural tapestry. Because I was watching, understanding, and embracing it. The Chingay Parade is not just a performance, but a vivid lesson in Singapore’s multiculturalism and community spirit.
